The big states wanted the legislature to directly represent the population because then there would be more legislators from big states than small states and so the legislature would better reflect the needs of the big states.
The small states wanted the legislature to have the same number of members from each states, giving the individuals in the small states more power because fewer people have the same say as more people and can sometimes overrule a majority of the citizenship.
The compromise was to have 2 chambers in congress. Bicameral means 2 chambers. The Senate would have 2 members for each State.
