As you might suspect, this is an Arabic name. It is actually a red super giant star. Its absolute magnitude is anywhere from 3.1 to 3.9. Remember that the lower the magnitude number the brighter the star. Ras Algethi is not a very bright star. For comparison, Polaris, the North Star, is 鈥?!



If you observe the constellation Hercules in mid to late May you will see a meteor shower that seems to come from this part of the sky.
